Budapest Mayor criticizes Orbán’s announcement of restrictions
Reacting to the prime minister’s announcement on Tuesday of a night-time curfew and other measures in response to escalating coronavirus infections, Budapest’s mayor, Gergely Karácsony, said on Facebook: “Better late than never … I can only hope it’s not too late.”
In the post late in the evening, Karácsony accused the government of having long ignored the advice of experts to increase testing capacity. He called for testing to be extended to people working in public education.
Karácsony also called for greater restrictive measures over large-scale events.
He criticsed the measure to make parking free of charge in a bid to reduce the burden on public transport, saying
the impact of free parking on curbing the epidemic was probably less than the impact of lost revenue on municipalities.
The mayor said his administration would come to decisions that can be made within its own competence and reveal the details later today.
